A new campaign from Vienna Tourism humorously connects the city’s death culture with its most beautiful places. The spot, directed by London-based animation studio BlinkInk and director Sam Gainsborough, features a mayfly as the protagonist and aims to attract tourists from around the world.

The Central Cemetery serves as the backdrop for the video, which is titled "Vienna: the last place you want to be." The choice of the mayfly symbolizes the insect’s desire to experience as much as possible in its short lifespan of just 24 hours. During its journey, it discovers Vienna's cultural and culinary diversity before spending its final moments in the city.

“Without a doubt, a touch of morbidity is ingrained in the Viennese soul,” says Vienna Tourism director Norbert Kettner. “We use this in our latest short film as a vehicle to showcase the joy of life, culture, and culinary delights our city has to offer. With an unconventional idea and accessible approach, we highlight classic Viennese assets. We emphasize that Vienna rightly continues to be named the most livable city in the world. The film, which begins at the Vienna Central Cemetery, is both a tribute and a celebration of its 150th anniversary.”

"What would you do with one day to live? Through the eyes of a mayfly with just one day on Earth, Sam Gainsborough shows us that all it takes is a day out in Vienna to be fulfilled with life. This mixed media tour of the Austrian capital takes us through cakes, crypts, spritz, schnitzel, the orchestra, and a hint of Klimt. Take in all these Viennese treats and die a happy mayfly." The short film was created in collaboration with Jung von Matt Donau, director Sam Gainsborough, the London production company BlinkInk, and Austrian composer Walter Werzowa, featuring a 40-member orchestra composed of students from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
