BMW presents the global campaign for the new M5 sedan with the title ‘Duality Untamed’, which was produced by Media.Monks Germany together with style icon and Fashion Designer Justin O’Shea. From working as creative director at Brioni or launching his own fashion label SSS World Corp. to his present role as CD for the spirits portfolio at LVMH, O’Shea appreciates extremes and supposed contradictions. Characteristics that are perfectly reflected in the all-new BMW M5.
Directed by Knut Burgdorf, it was shot across Barcelona to capture urban footage and Almería’s racetrack for high-performance sequences (production: Parasol Island). Complementing the film, photographer Agnieszka Doroszewicz conducted a separate photo shoot.
“It’s not very often that the personality of the car and the protagonist are so in sync. Although the M5 is a dream car, I tried to stage the film in the here and now, making the dream relatable. Every car enthusiast can relate to becoming a different persona by feeling the power of such a car. This feel is what I wanted to portray. And Justin is the perfect protagonist for that,” says Director Knut Burgdorf.
One of the fundamental themes throughout the campaign for the all-new BMW M5 is the concept of ‘duality untamed’. How does Justin relate to the concept? “My life is kind of summed up in this concept. I have always had two sides, whether it be work and play or business and family. One side always fuels the other and vice versa. Ultimately, they are tied together by the emotions and mentality that define who I am – passion, devotion, hard work and fun.”
“The M5 is an iconic model with an impressive history, and working on the launch of the BMW M5 plug-in hybrid has been an incredible privilege for our team. With ‘Duality Untamed’, we wanted to give the M5 a platform that captures its essence: performance paired with progressiveness, power and style. The contrasting worlds within which we have staged Justin O’Shea together with the vehicle are interwoven in the film to create a dynamic experience, uniting all of these elements,” says Mario Zaradic, Creative Director at Media.Monks.

In his usual powerful imagery – the spot for BMW’s The 4 campaign by Director UWE DUETTMANN stages the equally athletic and exhilarating BMW 4 Series with striking uber-catchy character. More emotion than a mere commercial, while purposely provocative, definitely independent and even a bit edgy – the spot skillfully plays with the brand attributes.
“The BMW 4 Series Coupé boasts unparalleled aesthetics, sporty dynamic performance and a premium interior. Its combination of standalone design and impressive agility generates an extraordinary aesthetic appeal.” says BMW.
With its four brands BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad, the BMW Group is the world’s leading premium manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles, as well as the provider of premium financial and mobility services. The company has around 125,000 employees worldwide.
After more than two decades in the business, the portfolio of the highly decorated advertising and transportation specialist Uwe Duettmann reflects the highly productive and slightly crazy side of the advertising world in a positive sense. From raising an eyebrow or magically putting a smile on your face, to serious portraits and glossy car shots, or even bizarre scenarios – let Uwe take you with him on a big colorful journey – the story of which is far from over.

After what feels like a small eternity, we were delighted to see so many dear faces at UPDATE-22-BERLIN. A good 60 agencies were at the event, the UPDATE LIBRARY was up and running, and the GoSeeAWARDS winners were once again chosen. We would especially like to thank Kristina and Marion here for doing such a great job at the UPDATE Bar.
We would also like to take a moment to thank BMW, KeKo, antoni, Zalando, Otto, Kolle Rebbe, Jung von Matt, Whale Amsterdam, Lloyd Schuhe, Scholz & Friends, Track, Looping Group, McCann, Calvin Klein, Heimat, Leo Burnett, Liebeskind Berlin, Publicis One Touch, Wunderman Thompson, WE LOVE Artbuying, C3 Creativ Code and Content, BBDO, Kemmler & Kemmler, Peter Hahn, thjnk, Kolle Rebbe, Theo Wormland, Muehlhausmoers, Zum Goldenen Hirschen, Non Food, Velocity McCann, … as well as the many art producers, art buyers, and direct clients.
We were particularly delighted in 2022 by the great number of international exhibitors that the event attracted. Sweden, Norway, Poland, France, Holland, Austria, the US, India, … It’s wonderful to see how far UPDATE and GoSee shine their light. We have made ourselves a promise to do everything in our power that it stays that way or shines even more brightly.
We have several beautiful impressions for you and a few quotes from exhibitors of UPDATE-22-BERLIN. We’ll see you in 2023.
“As always, extraordinarily professional and with meticulous attention to detail. We are extremely satisfied and very exhausted after what feels like six hours of speed dating.” Doro Göbels, CEO ROCKENFELLER & GÖBELS, Düsseldorf.
“I want to thank you again from the bottom of my heart for the very successful trade show. Great venue, good people, excellently organized. Of course, for Atau and me, a very special highlight was that he got the chance to work on the wall and not ‘only’ on canvas. Even more wonderful is that Frau Maaß was so happy with the result, she decided it can stay. How many 24-year-olds can say that their work adorns a wall at Humboldt Carré.” Eva Witt-Braedt, CEO ART ACT, agency for illustration, Munich.
“Hope you are well and had time to rest yesterday. I wanted to thank you and your team for the great trade show. I know how much work it implies. You guys nailed it!! I’m very happy and I’m looking forward to the next one.” Olivier Jezequel, LGA MANAGEMENT, Paris.
“We had a great day and met a lot of creatives. Thank you and see you next year.” Monique Grondijs, CEO MRS. ROBINSON, Amsterdam.
“What a pleasure to meet you all in person. You did a fantastic job, and we enjoyed every minute. We hope to see all of you in India. Do not hesitate to get in touch whenever you have any questions.” Harsha Sinha, Producer, ELEMENTS.ASIA, New Delhi.
