The Museum for Pre-Columbian Art, Museo Diego Rivera Anahuacalli – or simply Museo Anahuacalli, goes back to Diego Rivera. His collection of more than 50,000 objects laid the foundation for the museum. Construction and installation of Museo Anahuacalli began in 1942, and the building was finished in 1963. But it was not until the year 1964 that it opened. The museum was originally planned as the personal residence of Diego Rivera and as a place of storage for his pre-Columbian collection. In 1942, he purchased land in San Pablo Tepetla, which was still located outside the city limits at the time.
