Arnhel’s image of ‘Richard the Postman’ features in the book – Hold Still  – published by the National Portrait Gallery. “We invited people of all ages to submit a photographic portrait, taken in a six-week period during May and June, focussed on three core themes – Helpers and Heroes, Your New Normal and Acts of Kindness.  Over 31,000 submissions were received from across the country, with entrants ranging from 4 to 75 years-old. From these, a panel of judges selected 100 portraits, assessing the images on the emotions and experiences they conveyed.” As part of the launch, contributors to the collection are leaving books in places that gave them hope during the lockdown. Arnhel left his copy in St.Mary’s church on Putney Bridge. The first person to pick up the book was none other than Warrick Woodhouse, one of the four founders of Getty Images!

I love to see the absurd in the everyday' - Arnhel De Serra’s work is multi-layered, being comical, disruptive, political and colourful. At heart, he is nosey and curious about other people’s business. He loves to see the absurd in the everyday. His eye is constantly roving and casting around for opportunities – why make it up when the real world is so rich with potential? See more of Arnhel’s work here © // 5 files show complete blog

GQ UK Men of the Year Cover – Marcus Rashford by Hamish BROWN c/o JSR AGENCY
Hamish Brown shot British GQ Magazine’s 23rd annual Men of the Year 2020 award winner Marcus Rashford cover. A really worthy winner!  The editorial reads:

“in a world on its knees come the people determined to make a stand. And the GQ Men Of The Year Awards, in its 23rd year, has provided us with an opportunity to celebrate the people who made the world a better place over the past 12 months, when we’ve needed them most.”

“Twenty-three-year-old Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford used his platform for good, too, taking to Twitter during the Premier League shutdown to campaign for free school meals for starving children over the summer holidays. After forcing a u-turn from Boris Johnson, he has been the best kind of thorn in the side of the Conservative government ever since. ”

'The Country Show' by Arnhel de Serra c/o JSR AGENCY
Arnhel De SERRA c/o JSR AGENCY has documented Rural County Fairs for a number of years and the results are a joyous peek inside rural communities, eccentricities and English traditions. The Museum of English Rural Life in association with Reading University has launched 'The Greatest Online Agricultural Show' and celebrates Arnhel's work:

As The Greatest Online Agricultural Show launches, this is the perfect time to revisit the extraordinary work of photographer Arnhel de Serra. His amazing exposé of The Country Show was shot between 2004 and 2014 and captures the quirky, strange, and invitingly surreal world of rural shows.

Country shows are meeting points between urban and rural, between spectator and exhibitor. Different worlds collide and create new ideas of the countryside. This small selection of images reminds us of the fleeting moments that bring these events to life.
