FORD took the social media world by surprise with an impressive fake-OOH ad developed by the agencies [m]STUDIO and Mindshare. In the video, the Cologne Cathedral looks like it has been dipped completely into a bucket of yellow paint. And perched upon a steel platform between its two iconic spires at a dizzying height of 140 meters is a car. Suddenly, a giant banner is unfurled on the west facade, revealing the new yellow all-electric Ford Capri.
The 15-sec. clip of this scene has made quite a splash on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. The ad, that looks stop-you-in-your-tracks real at first glance, was brought to life through the skillful and careful combination of CGI tech and live action. To make it, MONDLICHT STUDIOS shot several spots at different times over the course of a day with professional cameras and then edited the best shot – replacing the Cologne Cathedral completely with digital imagery.
It was a joint project between Ford Germany, Mindshare Germany, [m]STUDIO GmbH – The Relevance Company, GroupM Germany, and GoSee Member Mondlicht Studios.
“The iconic Ford Capri® is back, and this time – it’s electric!⚡️We’re delighted to celebrate its return with a one-of-a-kind ‘fake-out-of-home’ ad, placing the all-new Capri front and center atop the Cologne Cathedral. Thanks to everyone who helped bring this electrifying vision to life!” says Frank Olma, Executive Creative Director of Essence Mediacom Germany | [m]STUDIO Germany.
The new FORD CAPRI is produced exclusively, by the way, or perhaps rather of course, in Cologne on the Rhine. The yellow color of the Cologne Cathedral mimics the Vivid Yellow paint code – alluding to the color of the Ford Capri RS from the 1970s.
The Cologne Cathedral is one of the world’s largest Gothic cathedrals. Construction began in 1248, and it wasn’t completed until 1880. With a total height of 157 meters, it is the second-tallest religious building in Germany after the Ulm Minster and the third-tallest church in the world. And hanging cars anywhere – inside or outside of the Cologne Cathedral – has been strictly prohibited since time immemorial.
