The first Thalia bookstore opens in the building of Hamburg's traditional Thalia Theater, whose name goes back to one of the Greek patron goddesses of the arts, the muse Thalia. Following the merger with Mayersche Buchhandlung in 2019, Thalia Bücher GmbH, based in Hagen, now owns over 340 bookstores in Germany and Austria as well as 50% of the shares in the more than 30 bookstores of Orell Füssli Thalia AG in Switzerland.
Since 2013, the Thalia bookstore chain, which is now part of Douglas Holding, has been part of the joint venture Orell Füssli Thalia Ltd (OFT). Both companies each hold 50 percent of the shares in the new public limited company based in Zurich, and the Board of Directors also has equal representation.
