The British photographer Nick REES presents a captivating new project that explores objects not for what they are, but for what they are made of. Through still life photography, this work unveils the unseen stories within everyday materials—objects that shape our world, fuel our desires, and define our existence. It intensifies the gaze, stripping items to their essence, revealing the fundamental elements that have driven civilizations, inventions, and human ambition. Featured are helium, aluminum, iron, and gold in a fresh new interpretation.
Nick REES : "I’m thrilled to be able to show you the first few images from my new project. Wherever we are in life it is vital to remember that everything starts and is created from the humblest of beginnings. I am a still life photographer. I find objects fascinating. Every ‘thing’ has a story, from the person who invented, made, found, grew, destroyed it, lost it or found it again. Objects can be both our most basic primal need or our most jealous desire. This project looks at objects not for what they are, but what they are made of. With my commercial work I often take mass produced objects and try to show them in their most aesthetically pleasing way. I select one and turn it into an ambassador for the others, assuming that each object is created equal to the next. From my image you can see exactly what you can get. This project takes this process further, focusing the lens, it intensifies the gaze onto the objects that make objects.
The elements have fascinated every culture and civilisation. The understanding and thirst for new information has fuelled wars, changed religions and saved lives. From the dawn of time humans have been finding and using tools, improving and changing them to match and shape our ambition. Whether practical, scientific, emotional or religious even those who shun material possessions rely on objects for their survival. It is against this backdrop that I want to look at the world and its ingredients."
Nick REES is a British photographer and director. Working with international brands and agencies, he creates images and films which show the products as heroes within their own world. Nick’s technical skill and approach are the perfect partner for both luxury products and mass produced items looking for an ambassador to define them. He presents them to the world as the union of innovation, craft and modernity. With studios in London and Frankfurt he is ready to tackle any project.
