Works by light artist Jan Kuck are now on display at the Copenhagen Light Festival, in the solo exhibition WORDS ARE OVERESTIMATED at Galerie Koppelmann Cologne (through 18 March, 2023), at MAISON MARSIL Cologne, and at HOTO in Berlin. Jan’s art is a mirror image of society intended to make people think about themselves and social evils.
“Language and interpersonal communication are a central thread throughout the oeuvre of conceptual artist Jan Kuck. He always uses just as many words as are necessary to formulate his amusing, critical and sometimes cynical messages. In the solo exhibition WORDS ARE OVERESTIMATED, we present selected light installations, sculptures and graphics by the artist in cooperation with Bernheimer Contemporary,” says gallerist Janine Koppelmann.
The Copenhagen Light Festival on Jan Kuck’s work ‘Arachne’ : “The installation consists of a glowing carpet, which can be seen as a comment on the conditions behind the global textile production industry and its trading relationships in both a historical and contemporary context. It also deals with the connection to the development of women’s rights. Weaving and textile work has historically been done mainly by women, while men have benefitted from it. Today, women suffer from harsh working conditions, while international textile companies, usually led by men, reap the rewards. On the one hand, this piece is a critique of patriarchal power structures, and on the other, it is a tribute to the strength of women.”
At the moment, Jan Kuck and his agent Isabel Bernheimer have plans for further projects. Later in the year, his installation ‘THE BURNING CANAL’, shown for the first time in 2020 as the ‘THE BURNING RIVER’ in Munich, will be on display in Copenhagen as a large-scale installation.
