Sam Youkilis (*1993) captures the longing of travel and the beauty of the everyday with attention to detail and vibrant colors. As a photographer and filmmaker, the New Yorker documents his daily observations – from a morning view from the window to seemingly trivial moments that he captures with his iPhone: the freshly served espresso, colorful market stalls, fishing boats, or tender human gestures.
In addition to his work in commercial fashion photography, Youkilis has developed his own visual language and method. He uses his travels to capture recurring scenes at tourist destinations in atmospheric short videos. On Instagram, he shares his visual notes, which move between street, travel, food, and documentary photography. While social media often spreads clichés and holiday idylls, Youkilis takes it a step further by documenting local traditions and crafts. His images merge amateur logic with the professionalism of an artist who perfects the allure of the image. His works are poetic, universal representations of human experiences.
In 'Under the Sun,' Youkilis' visual archive of iPhone videos is presented in an immersive exhibition space. This is his first institutional solo exhibition worldwide. A publication will accompany the exhibition.
