GoSee Loves : the master of staged photography EUGENIO RECUENCO presents his epochal body of work ‘365º’ at Museo de Bellas Artes de Castellón in Valencia
The project ‘365º’ by Spanish photographer Eugenio Recuenco is an impressive and ambitious body of work which has caused quite a sensation in the photography world. Recuenco, who is known for his cinematic style and artistic vision, created a series consisting of 365 photographs – one for each day of the calendar year. Each photo tells a story of its own in connection with major topics of humankind – whether politics, society, art or culture.
‘365º’ takes viewers on a photographic journey through events of world history – from the art of the Middle Ages, to social networks, or even the political issues of our day and age. Eugenio Recuenco sets world events within new microcosms. His at times subtle and often elaborate sceneries are cinematographically composed.
‘365º’ is not only a testament to Recuenco’s technical mastery – it also provides profound commentary on various aspects of human existence, encouraging viewers to contemplate the complexity of everyday life and the various facets of life in general. The project has been on display in galleries around the world and was a great success both in the art world and among the general public. The exhibition is now on show in Valencia.
Eduardo Recuenco : 'I thought the representation of the absurdity in most of our daily actions could become a fierce criticism. The absurd, by nature, doesn’t allow replicas; it can only help us to put on a smile in public, and in private, it makes us change.
The first level is where the game of aesthetics comes into play; in no way have I attempted to limit it, although it is not the main objective of this project. The 365 photographs are pleasing to the eye and may surprise the spectator with their blend of reality and fantasy, of past and present, memories and reality – in the same shot, through unlikely characters.
There is a second level to the game: the spectator looks for the calendar that appears in all of the photographs; sometimes, it is more obvious than others. There are also references to passages of art and film history, or historical events that may be recognized.
On a third, we find ourselves within the actual discourse of each photo. Sometimes, critical towards the world we live in, others with humor, and some even with an autobiographical touch. The photographs attempt to depict the society and world I have had to live in, to show how I have felt it. This is why, in some cases, I present familiar stories deformed by my experiences, with which the spectator may be uncomfortable since they do not correspond to the images the spectator may have. But where is the error? In my exposition or in their manipulated knowledge?”
