GoSee Loves … WILLY VANDERPERRE prints, films, a rave and more … – with an exhibition at MOMU Antwerp spotlighting the star photographer’s fascination with youth culture
MoMu, the fashion museum in Antwerp, explores the oeuvre of the Belgian photographer Willy Vanderperre. His editorial work appears regularly in magazines such as AnOther Magazine, Dust, i-D, Perfect, Vogue, and W Magazine. He has also photographed for Raf Simons, Christian Dior, Dior Homme, Jil Sander, and Prada.
The exhibition examines Vanderperre’s fascination with youth culture more closely, which has been a motivational force for the photographer now for almost three decades. Moreover, he has also selected several works of art that engage in a dialogue with his photographs and serve as an important source of inspiration for the continuous development of his universe. Alongside the evolution of his visual language in the photographic works, a particular spotlight is also shined on Vanderperre’s long-standing collaboration with Olivier Rizzo and Raf Simons.
Consistent with his obsession with youth- and subculture, Willy Vanderperre has developed a program, comprised of film, music and the launch of his limited-edition collectible items in the form of drops, which are available for purchase in the foyer. Part of the proceeds are donated to çavaria, the Flemish advocacy group for LGBTI+ people. çavaria is committed to the well-being, equal rights, and equal opportunities of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex individuals.
Born and raised in Belgium, Willy Vanderperre is a photographer and filmmaker who plays a highly influential role in the fashion industry. Based in Antwerp, the city that became his home when he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp) to study fashion, he made the switch to photography while still in college. Seeing photography as a more direct way to express his impulses in fashion, nevertheless, his background in design has given him both an intuitive feel for clothing and an extensive knowledge of the design process. Today, he produces both influential and highly regarded fashion editorial shoots and advertising campaigns each season. In recent years, other projects have taken him beyond the world of fashion and immersed him in the those of contemporary dance theatre, the instantaneous nature of Instagram and extended narrative filmmaking (Art + Commerce).
