From 22 September, 2023, to 1 January, 2024, the Museum Folkwang presents works from the ‘Archive of Public Protests’ by Polish photographer Rafał Milach in the photographic collection. He fights for climate protection and human rights, and also founded the Archive of Public Protests together with colleagues. The exhibition presents Milach’s photographs alongside works from the photographic collection.
The photographs, videos and publications explore the topic of political and social protests in Poland. It is a collection of photographs representing a warning against increasing right-wing populism and discrimination in the broadest sense: xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny and also the climate crisis. The exhibition juxtaposes the activist archive of the Magnum photographer with press photos and demonstrations from the Girardet photo archive.
Rafał Milach, born 1978 in Gliwice, is among the most successful international Polish photo artists. At the heart of his work are socio-political transformation processes in the former East Bloc. Many of his long-term projects are dedicated to the situation of young people under changed political conditions.
“The ‘Archive of Public Protests' has also been published as a book. Rafal: “A photography book is one of my favorite formats that I apply to most of my projects. I don’t perceive the photography book as a display for images but as artistic and physical gestures that serve the idea of the project.”
