Bastian THIERY c/o BIRD photographed Wolfgang Joop for DIE ZEIT magazine at his home in Potsdam, celebrating the designer's 80th birthday. In an interview with DIE ZEIT, Joop discusses his Prussian identity, his humble beginnings, and the happiness of beauty. In 2025, there will be an exhibition in Potsdam showcasing Wolfgang Joop's life’s work. In addition to fashion designs, sketches, and sculptures, the retrospective will also offer insights into Joop's private life.
Born on November 18, 1944, in Potsdam, Wolfgang Joop grew up on a farm near Sanssouci Palace and developed an early interest in art and design. After studying architecture in Hamburg, he turned to fashion in the 1970s. In 1981, he founded his own fashion company and gained attention in 1982 with a collection that quickly established him as a leading designer in Germany.
In the 1980s, Joop gained international fame, particularly with his presentations at Paris Fashion Week, where he showcased elegant, feminine designs with modern accents. In 1986, he launched his successful fragrance line, Joop!. Despite his success, Joop gradually withdrew from active business in 2001 and sold parts of his company.
