Les Rencontres d’Arles is the largest photography festival in France and an essential event for photography aficionados worldwide. From 1 July through 29 September 2024, the historical town of Arles will be transformed into a vibrant hotspot for photo art. With more than 100,000 visitors at each edition, the festival is a visitor magnet. Like every year, Rolf Scheider will be there to report for GoSee from the opening week.
Waiting for visitors to discover are more than forty exhibitions of renowned photographers from all corners of the globe in various locations throughout the city. The overarching theme this year is ‘BENEATH THE SURFACE’. Tremors and turmoil, spirits, traces, and readings are all among the perspectives that form the foundation of the 2024 edition of Les Rencontres d’Arles. Photographers, artists and curators reveal their visions and stories in endless redefinition. Whether marginal or firmly established in the center, the narratives lead to multiple, divergent paths, all emanating from faults in a porous surface: each intertwining, superimposing and overlapping. It’s an exciting time – as this ensemble opens a plurality of itineraries to pursue.
The WOMEN IN MOTION AWARD FOR PHOTOGRAPHY will be presented to ISHIUCHI MIYAKO. Through a presentation of intimate scenes, Ishiuchi Miyako invites viewers to examine their own perceptions of femininity and womanhood.
The exhibition ‘I’m So Happy You Are Here – Japanese Women Photographers from the 1950s to Now’ is a collection of photographs from 25 intergenerational artists. It grants an exciting glimpse at Japan and Japanese photography from different perspectives – encouraging a more nuanced and expansive conversation about the contributions of Japanese women to photography as a medium.
Photographer Gauri Gill, the winner of the 10th Prix Pictet, presents her winning series ‘Notes from the Desert’ within the context of her ongoing projects from rural India.
The key visual is from Cristina De Middel’s series ‘Journey to the Center’ that mimics the atmosphere and structure of the Jules Verne novel ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ – portraying the migration route from Central America across Mexico as a heroic and daring journey and not as an act of fleeing.
