For the 10th edition of EMOP Berlin from 2 through 31 March, 2023, more than 100 exhibitions and well over 500 participating photographers are turning Berlin into the capital of photography. The anniversary edition in Berlin is celebrating 20 years of photography festival culture. Under the central theme of ‘Touch’, the festival has been dedicated since 2 March to topics such as proximity and distance, technical and artistic innovation, climate change and the energy crisis, the Ukraine war, as well as the future of photographic archives – as seen from the perspectives of the participating photographers.
“With the EMOP Berlin and its 100 partners, we invite visitors to rediscover Berlin as a photography hotspot – for an entire month, with 100 exhibitions accompanied by an extensive festival program. Our two central venues in the west and the east of the city – are at the same time the starting points and particular highlights. For the exhibition showing to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the EMOP Berlin, the baroque-esque Amtsalon in Charlottenburg is offering a fascinating contrast to the vacant office building hosting the photography school’s exhibitions at Leipziger Straße 54.” Moritz van Dülmen, CEO of Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH.
“20 years of photo festival culture in Berlin have also meant 20 years of digital transformation to photography as a medium – one that today more than ever is finding its way into all areas of society, and is thus becoming more present with a more powerful impact than ever. Which is precisely why programs like the EMOP Berlin are so important: because it is here that exhibitions and supporting programs open up spaces and indicate pathways to explore the issues of our day and age.” Maren Lübbke-Tidow, Artistic Director of the EMOP Berlin 2023.
During the 10th edition of Germany’s largest photography festival – which opened at 7 pm on 2 March at Amtsalon in a ceremony hosted by Berlin Culture Senator Klaus Lederer – visitors across Berlin and Potsdam can look forward to exhibitions from around 100 partners including the Helmut Newton Foundation, C/O Berlin, Deutsches Historisches Museum, Palais Populaire, and Akademie der Künste.
For the EMOP Berlin 2023, a number of archives are also opening their doors: Across six events, visitors are guided through photographic archives held at locations including the Foundation of Photography and Media Art with the Michael Schmidt Archive, the Museum of Photography, the Walter Benjamin Archive (Akademie der Künste) and Berlinische Galerie. For the duration of an afternoon, dialogues with archivists and collection curators grant insight into works which otherwise remain well-protected behind closed doors. The program entitled ‘Disruptions of the 20th century’ uses images and archival material to establish a connection between past experiences of war in Europe and the war currently raging in Ukraine.
A catalogue is being published for the EMOP Berlin 2023, edited by Kulturprojekten Berlin and featuring contributions from Susanne Holschbach, Maren Lübbke-Tidow and Rebecca Wilton (German/English, 232 pages, 145 illustrations. Price: €10). It is available from all EMOP Berlin 2023 partners and at Amtsalon). Admission to all exhibitions and events at Amtsalon and in Leipziger Straße is free of charge.
The EMOP Berlin is a member of the European Month of Photography (EMOP) a joint European project that currently also includes photography festivals in Brussels, Lisbon, Luxembourg, Paris and Vienna. The idea of launching a European network of photography festivals was born in 2003 upon the initiative of Berlin’s partner city Paris. The joint project aims to promote European cooperation, to strengthen the international photography community, to deepen international exchange of information and experiences, and to support young artists. In the months to come, festivals will take place in Paris (25 March – 31 May, 2023), Luxembourg (10 May – 30 June, 2023) and Vienna (1 June – 30 June, 2023).
The EMOP Berlin is a project brought to you by Kulturprojekte Berlin in cooperation with photography institutions in Berlin and Potsdam. It is made possible through funding from the Senate Department for Culture and Europe as well as from the European Regional Department Fund (ERDF). Visitors will find an overview of all venues, exhibitions and dates online.
