Showstudio The Shop presents an exclusive selection of hat creations and headdress by the most renowned milliners of our times. The ‘Headdress’ exhibition includes works by Jordan Askill, Stephen Jones, Charlie Le Mindu, Nasir Mazhar and Noki, which can be admired and purchased. For those who dare.
Each example represents the perfect balance between art object and functional accessory and sets the bar high for creativity and the respective handcraft involved.
The Orb by Nasir Mazhar, a headdress, which circles the wearer’s head as if in orbit, has already been donned by Lady Gaga in a shoot for V magazine. Another creation from the Autumn 2009 collection almost encases the whole head in leather, like an oversize visor.
Jordan Askill from Australia has already fascinated the fashion world with his pieces for Ksubi and Dior Homme. Showstudio presents ‘Battle Cat’ a headdress like a swarm of swallows on water. George Barnett, band member of These New Puritans, wore the piece in their We Want War video.
At the age of 13, a young boy in France, named Charlie Le Mindu began to sculpt hair. Today his clients include Adamski, Peaches and the B52s. His ‘Plaited Mask’ is also, less surprisingly, known as Octopus Wig and was presented at London Fashion Week, as well as in Zoo magazine.
Le Mindu created a trend statement with ‘Blonde Lips’, which Lady Gaga translated into a perfect performance in her Bad Romance video.
Subversive designer Noki’s creations are experiments in embellishment and have already been displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York and Victoria and Albert Museum London, amongst others. The Tyrone Le Bon photographed Judy Blame in the ‘Pinkpin-Punkinhead’ for i-D Magazine. Showstudio now presents the piece.
For over 25 years, Stephen Jones’ designs have defined contemporary and dominant millinery. His client list is very long and ranges from Gwen Stefani, to Marilyn Manson, onto John Galliano and Vivienne Westwood. He specially designed a hat, which looks like an enchanted dolls house for art director and set designer Simon Costin. Nick Knight then photographed him wearing it for i-D’s 100 portraits.
Almost all objects can still be purchased. For extravagant wearers and big collectors. Prices range between £2,000 and £30,000.
