MARCUS PHILIPP SAUER blends in 'DIMENSIONS' cityscapes of New York with photos of fish – providing food for thought about humane treatment appropriate for their species

In his project ‘Dimensions’, the photographer and director explores the topic of aquarium ethics by emphasizing the spacial dimensions that animals need in order to develop freely in nature. Marcus photographed animals in the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta and placed them amid New York cityscapes.

“The comparison underscores how people can move from place to place freely and go wherever they want, while aquarium animals are confined to tiny tanks for human entertainment,” the photographer tells GoSee. “Why do humans have to kill, eat, breed or hold animals captive – and don’t just let them live the way nature planned for them?”

The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta holds 31,000 m³ of saltwater and fresh water as well as more than 100,000 animals of 500 species, making it the largest aquarium in the world at the time of its opening. Among the biggest attractions are whale sharks, belugas and manta rays.
