Photographer duo Antonia and Alexander Feig visited locals on their trips to the popular Balearic island, who stand for a self-confident Majorca: Maria Solivellas, a pioneer of the zero-kilometer concept of Neo-Majorcan cuisine. In her Restaurant CA NA TONETA she only cooks foods available on the island or off its shores. Albert Pinya, artist from the island capital Palma, speaks in his works about the political and cultural development of Majorca. Wine rebel Tomeo Llabres, who founded a new vineyard in his home town of Binissalem. Under the label CAN VERDURA, he only grows autochthonous types of grapes. The olive oil from SOLIVELLAS are among the best produced in the Mediterranean region. Almost all top chefs of Majorca use the liquid gold from Pep Solivellas in their kitchens.
Each encounter with these protagonists helped to shape the perspective of the two food and travel photographers. The result of which they present in MALLORCA – MAR i MUNTANYA. The illustrated book contains 264 pages of food stills, landscape photographs in subtle colors, contemporary street photography, and portraits. The subtitle Photos | Thoughts | Recipes refers to informative text passages on culinary culture and savoir vivre as well as recipes for cooking typical island dishes at home. There is a chapter with an English translation for international readers.
Graphic designer Sandra Kubitza presents the imagery with a clear layout. A map of the island lovingly illustrated by hand helps readers find their way around the island. The hardcover book with a linen binding was artistically adorned by hand with a screen-printed title in white paint. This technique makes each copy one of a kind. The elegant black thread stitching on the inside perfectly matches the striking typography. All production steps from layout to book printing, finishing the screen-printed title and the final binding were done in Germany.
Book authors Alexander and Antonia Feig and co-publisher Jürgen Frischmann received the German Design Award in the category Books and Calendars in 2015 and 2018 for their food calendar projects.
