Esther Haase opens with 'Esther's World' (Hatje Cantz) a treasure chest filled with her favorite photos, signed at the Frankfurt Book Fair, and invites to a glamorous salon evening at Haus der Fotografie in Hamburg

This fall, an illustrated book with selected works by Esther Haase is appearing. She has worked for major magazines and international clients for more than twenty-five years, and playfully alternates between fashion, (celebrity) portrait, and reportage. Her oeuvre is permeated by a particular lightness; the women come across as cheerful and larksome, yet they are always self-determined and strong, sexy, and stylish. Anyone who photographs knows how difficult it is to make a selection…Which is why Esther chose Nadine Barth, an experienced curator and photography expert, to develop 'Esther's World' together with her.

Dancing with Esther... A new illustrated book by Esther Haase is appearing this fall – following Fashion in Motion (2000), Sexy Book (2006), Rock’n’Old (2010) and Amazons (2011). She has worked for major magazines and international clients for more than twenty-five years, and playfully alternates between fashion, (celebrity) portrait, and reportage.

Her oeuvre is permeated by a particular lightness; the women come across as cheerful and larksome, yet they are always self-determined and strong, sexy, and stylish. Anyone who photographs knows how difficult it is to make a selection…Which is why Esther chose Nadine Barth, an experienced curator and photography expert, to develop 'Esther's World' together with her. Chronological, thematic or according to color – putting together a photo archive as a best-of collection in book format is challenging, which Esther confirms to us with a smile.

For Esther Haase, it has to do with telling stories, whether by means of motion blur; lyrical and delicate, or brash colors; or black and white rich in contrast. Some images seem like cineastic dreams, while others are baroque stagings, and still other comical snapshots. Esther Haase describes her life as a dance with the camera through the world. Already at an early age, she accompanied her father, professor for photography and design, at photo shoots. With Esther’s World, the great German fashion photographer opens a treasure chest filled with her favorite pictures for the viewer. The book was designed by Julia Wagner.

“I am a storyteller. My photography leaves viewers space for before and after. Merely a beautiful girl in a beautiful place in a beautiful dress – that would not satisfy me. In my stagings, I am always in search of that one moment that initiates the narrative flow,” says Esther. “Her photos are timeless and function outside of the context in which they were made. That for me is what makes a good photo,” F. C. Gundlach writes in the foreword of "Esther's World". In 1999, he made the first exhibition by the photographer possible. 17 years later, on Gundlach's 90th birthday, she took 90 photos of her sponsor.

Esther Haase held a book signing on Saturday 14 October at the Frankfurt Book Fair (2 – 3pm, Ludwig-Erhard Building 1, 60327 Frankfurt am Main) and at Deichtorhallen in Hamburg. Freundeskreis der Fotografie together with Hatje Cantz Verlag invites to a glamorous salon evening on 2 November at 6pm (F.C. Gundlach Library at Haus der Photographie). There she will reveal how the fashion photo with the lion made it onto the book cover and which motifs in the book are her favorites.
