Zingst and the Photo Festival Horizonte Team are mourning the loss of Klaus Tiedge – organizer and curator of the Erlebniswelt Fotografie Zingst Photography Exhibitions
We recently received the news of Klaus Tiedge’s sudden passing and are deeply saddened. For more than fifteen years, Klaus Tiedge has been closely tied with the city of Zingst. In preparation of the first Environmental Photo Festival ‘Horizonte Zingst’ in 2008, he was appointed curator and has shaped photography in the city ever since. Besides his long-term plans regarding the content of the festival and his often unusual ideas, he above all brought a love and passion for all genres of photography to Zingst.

Klaus Tiedge learned the craft of photography from the bottom up at the Höhere Graphische Bundes-Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna, or simply the ‘Graphische’. For over a decade, he was responsible for press and public relations at AGFA, he worked as Chief Editor for renowned German photo magazines and founded his own publishing house ‘Designers Digest’ in 1981. The magazine of the same name was published with more than 100 issues. Afterwards, Klaus Tiedge focused on his new task as curator in Zingst. He not only brought domestic and international photography to the Baltic Sea, but also several friends, new and old, from the industry and various media. Klaus Tiedge loved to gather all of his photographer friends at the table in Zingst – he connected people, was known to make humorous or pensive comments on the exhibitions, was always up-to-the-minute on the photography industry, always had a witty remark in store, was a fan of great ideas, and relentlessly brought together all Zingst visitors to experience the big picture – his big picture.

Fueled by this energy, an ever-growing and more and more respected festival developed which meanwhile attracts thousands of visitors each year. Since 2018, he has gradually delegated his responsibilities, placing them in the hands of what he affectionately refers to as ‘his’ Zingst photo team. Filled with melancholy, but also full of hope that they will add to his oeuvre and continue to create their own. In 2020, he passed down his tenure as curator. In the days to come, Klaus Tiedge will be honored in Zingst. Klaus Tiedge will be missed.

Klaus Tiedge said once in an interview with Edda Fahrenhorst about the idea of establishing a photo festival in Zingst: “Peter Krüger, the dynamic general manager of Kur & Tourismus GmbH Zingst at the time, had the vision of making photography the distinguishing feature, a unique selling point, of the resort on the Baltic Sea. Establishing a photo festival seemed to be an adequate means of shedding light on the city’s dedication to the topic. Heinz Teufel had originally brought photography to Zingst with exhibitions and workshops – and the time had come to further the cause. I must admit, I looked upon the bold idea of initiating a festival with a certain skepticism at first, but the idea in itself was still very enticing. So I got to work, creating an event which would be successful because of the uniqueness of what it has to offer. Instead of putting together another photo festival filled with content about general topics, it would be an event focused on a program.” © Erlebniswelt Fotografie Zingst // 1 file show complete post
